How to change rear wheel bearings on 2012 S1000rr?

Cush drive and rear wheel bearing are on their way out as found during MOT.

I've got all the parts (thanks to Rainbow Motorcycles for fast delivery) and changed the bearing and oil seal on the sprocket carrier but struggling with getting the rear wheel bearings out.

It looks as though the bearing on the circlip side needs to come out first then the spindle (items 4 & 5) then a drift to get the bearing (item 6) out from the other side.

See below link from wheel component diagram.

    Any helpful suggestions?

    Thanks,
    Cube

Have you actually tried to remove them yet?

If they are not moving and you are worried about damaging something, then the time honoured method is to soak a cloth in hot water and wrap it around the area you want to work with, the heat will expand the wheel slightly and then the bearing 'should' come out.

If you have an old socket set, you should be able to make up a drift with an appropriate sized socket, then it's a matter of gentle persuasion.

If your'e not confident, then take the loose wheel to a bike shop, at least they won't charge you for removing the wheels.

When it comes to putting the new bearing in, the time honoured method is to put the bearings in the fridge to cool them down and make them 'contract' they are an interference fit so they need help, again, make up a drift using a socket of the appropriate size, i.e. the outer race, DO NOT drift the inner bearing, or you will destroy the bearing.

    I hope this helps.

Re: How to change rear wheel bearings on 2012 S1000rr?

Job done but needed an internal bearing puller to get the bearings out of the wheel as they recessed in seats and with the spacer bush in place not able to drift. See link above for diagram.

For anybody else looking to do the cush drive and bearings the following parts are used on a 2012 RR and should be checked against RealOEM for other model years.

Sprocket carrier bearing - Item 13 - BMW part number 27718523193; Koyo 62/28RDH
    Sprocket carrier shaft seal - Item 15 - BMW part number 27717711760; 58 x 40 x 9
    Wheel bearings - Items 4 & 6 - BMW part number 36317548881; Koyo 60/28ROC3
    Wheel shaft seal - Item 2 - BMW part number 36318561709; 52 x 35 x 7
Cush drive - Item 10 - BMW part number 27717711762

With the correct tools, all done in a morning.

    Cheers,

    Cube
