I have a Garmin zumo 660 and it is very good. The only issue with it, unlike the 550 it replaced, is the power cable is part of the cradle, it cannot be detached (unless you cut the cable). So once installed on the bike with power it is a pain to take off.
I'd go for chorsleys option using a phone and a third party cradle, much better and cheaper imo.

I have a Tomtom rider and it works well. I've used it both in the UK and Europe with no issues.
