Having searched around for a while on the various forums, hearsay, test reviews etc. can anyone confirm if the Euro4 Gen3 (sport) was a step up ready for the gen4/euro5 or is there much difference in the way the electronics actually work from the original Gen3 ?

The 2015-16 was EU4 'ready' but not compliant. Which mean with a larger cat it would pass EU4.
The 2015/2017 bikes are 98% the same, but the key differences on the 2017+ include;
- More powerful ECU which enforced Lambda's to be plugged in, so no basic piggyback Power Commanders...needs to be the latest spec.
- Bigger Generator with more sound deadening
- Cornering ABS by default
- Bigger Cat with dual exit
- Shorter belly pan due to above
