Took my bike for its annual service. Brakes stripped and cleaned as an extra. I'm getting my gear on when the guy cheerfully says, "we stuck it on the computer and applied the latest updates".

My heart sank.

Mild panic ensued that my custom map from RS2E had been obliterated.

Fired it up. She's in Sport. Press the TC +/- buttons and its still adjustable (unlike OEM)...breathe again. Rode her home no differences detected.

So, my question is what are the 'updates' then? Firmware? As opposed to the map which is software?

You can ask RS2E but as far as I know if update is installed then GOOD-BUY RS2E ECU.

BMW ISTA diagnostic software when it interigates the vehicle it creates a list of all available updates for all ECUs so means it could be updates for Instrument cluster, ABS, IMU.. Anything that is ran by its own software level. Engine ECU probably didn't need an update. Or they couldn't confirm software level due to the flash
