After selling the 1299 back in November I decided I still wanted a road bike and really fancied a K5/6 thou. Now a K9 was never on the agenda, I had even considered the K7/8 but because of all the greedy barstewards out there it made sense to buy the K9 which was cheaper than 99% of the K5/6?s that were for sale.

Astronomical prices, beggars belief!

Anyway, got this tidy enough K9 at much cheapness and it?s a decent bike, I?ve had to use it a few time?s for work whilst the van was in getting some work done and even though it?s not been used in anger it?s a relatively good bike. No plans other than maybe a QS and a taller screen, that?s really it. The end can is perfect, not overly loud at idle but tasty when you open her up.

My only gripe thus far is the mode button for scrolling through the trip 1,2, time, lap timer etc, why they didn?t put that on the left handlebar and had the power mode selector on the right is beyond me.

We plan on doing some Euro trips with more weekends away up North, if this Corona does one.

Still going strong with this bike??.ish. I have had to use it this year for commuting and as usual thats thrown up some problems. I also did a few track days which itself caused some issues, which I?ll get to. I?m definitely considering coming back to the beemer though.

I had ridiculous brake fade on track immediately which ruined the day, so I swapped out the standard brake lines, standard master cylinder and brake fluid.

I fitted Hel braided lines, RBF660 fluid and the RCS19 M/C. I was already running GPFAX pads. The fork seals were leaking so I serviced them. I stuck on another rear S22 and booked another track day. All day sessions.

Within no time the brake fade was still happening, not quite as bad but it was there. Also the discs are now warped giving me a bad vibration which was disconcerting on track, another day ruined. I went out for 5 laps each session and that was it and rode at maybe 75%. I need to get to the bottom of this.

Try brembo zo6 pads maybe.

That setup should work.

I would prefer brembo over ebc pads myself

Fluid properly bled? Calipers clean? No stuck pots

Actually had to search Z06 Brembo in case there was some new hotness... you meant Z04 though I suspect.

Issue won?t be pads, the GPFAX pads are ridiculously good, bled correctly.

On the list is to strip and rebuild the calipers over the winter so I can rule them out. Some folk have been suggesting issues where the RCS needs rebuilt but it wasn?t that old. It was originally purchased and put on the wife?s bike and then put on my bike, it was maybe 10 months old. Plus the fact I had the same problem with the standard set up, but for ?40 I?d be as well getting that rebuilt and that?s ruled out as well. You have to send them away as a rebuild kit is not available.

The list is getting lengthy.

Brake discs
Pads (for the new discs)
Fluid
Caliper rebuild
M/C rebuild

If that doesn?t solve it then who knows.

After purchasing the bike the only things I did was replace the chain, sprockets, tyres and screen. I went with a much taller screen, Renthal sprockets and my usual go to D.I.D chain. I kept the gearing standard.

I swapped the pads out for GPFAX which work really well even on the road and with the standard set up, I thought the brakes were superb for the road, they never really showed any weaknesses until I took the bike on track. I also swapped out the standard grips for Progrip 717 which feel great and look very smart.

I then fitted the Translogic QS which I?m very pleased about, I think it?s the best standalone unit I have ever used.

This year I haven?t been for any runs, the bike has become my daily commuter and next year it will be the same, I had it the last two days for work but now it will be going away for the winter as I can get the car back. Nothing planned other than sort the above and do another service. I gave it the usual service at the start of the season but didn?t replace the air filter or plugs. I?ll probably do them this winter and also check valve clearances and check a few other things.

Gixers have always had poor calipers, were always swopped for r1 gold spots

That?s a good shout, which years are the best to go for?

I?m guessing I could fit the more recent calipers if the mount spacing is the same with spacers because the later R1?s are 320mm discs iirc whereas the K9 is 310mm. I could fit 320mm discs though as they?re needing replaced.

O god it's been a while since I've had gixers 2004 ish I think they were . Can't remember what size spacers were needed i remember on my k5 2.5mm spacers were needed.. I had a real tricked up k9 but didn't keep it long, I just couldn't get on with it
