So I noticed you guys call the new RR (K67) a Gen 4? Can someone explain that to me? What is the rational for the different gens? What is the definition of a generation in terms of bikes and specifically the S1000RR.

The way I see it, a generational change should be a drastic/significant difference, not a tweak or colour change, slight engine modifications or a new winglet.

I use the headlights as an indicator for the generations. With that thinking:

Gen 1 is 2009-2014
Gen 2 is 2015-2018/19 (2019 in NA)
Gen 3 is 2019/2020 (2020 in NA)

For us the 2012-2014 was the Gen2, it had body, engine, chassis and electronics updates which separate it from the first release.

2009-2011 = Gen 1
2012-2014 = Gen 2
2015-2018 = Gen 3
2019-on = Gen 4

In the UK this naming convention is commonplace across dealers, tuners and owners.

2012 had a new engine compared to the 2011? Some tweaks yes, but not new.

So I have a 2017 67 plate S1000R. What gen is this? 2nd gen? Is there plans for an update on the S1R?
