I?ve just returned from an absolutely fantastic weekend of racing at the Macau GP. We were fortunate enough to have both Paddock, and rather surprisingly, Grid Passes! The whole experience was unlike any other race meeting I?ve ever been to and the atmosphere was completely different to that which you find in the BSB paddock. Whilst the riders and teams take it extremely seriously it is much more relaxed as this race represents the end of the motorcycle season for most and the start of the winter break.

Interestingly there are no team garages like you find at a BSB race weekend. Instead the entire paddock is compressed into quite a small space in order to fit in the F3 teams so you see a proper mix of bikes and riders in each garage. I spent most of my time floating in and out of the PBM Ducati, Phil Crowe Racing BMW and Briggs Equipment Kawasaki garages watching as events unfolded. It was also a great opportunity to catch up with friends who I haven?t seen since moving overseas. The highlight however was being on the starting grid as the riders formed up for the race.

Having walked quite a bit of the Guia circuit you get a sense of just how fast and physically demanding the course is. The yellow and black barriers which line the entire circuit are imposing and the track in parts is narrow, undulating and altogether rather terrifying. The race itself was really good, if a little predictable based on free practice and qualifying times. After coming off the grid I watched the race from the pit wall and on the monitors in the paddock. Hickman cruised to his third Macau victory and the only other rider to even remotely challenge him was Rutter. The race was pretty much decided by Lap 4 as Hickman made a pass on Rutter and then comfortably maintained a one-second gap until the race was eventually red-flagged. Fortunately all those involved in the various accidents across the weekend, in all classes, are in good condition and recovering well.

After the race we were allowed into the winners enclosure under the podium to watch the riders come off the circuit; press interviews; trophy presentation and obligatory champagne spraying. Afterwards it was off to the paddock after party which spilled out into the Las Vegas style casinos and bars. Suffice to say it all finished at 0700 the next morning...

Apart from an outrageous hangover I got to keep my Paddock and Grid Pass as a memento and John McGuinness very kindly signed and gave me one of his race used knee sliders. All in all a great weekend with the added bonus of being able to watch the F3, GT and WTCR races from the grandstands.

If you are looking to experience something completely different then the Macau GP is well worth a visit.
