Suspension

It staggers me just how many people never bother to have their suspension set up correctly and then complain that the bike doesn't 'feel' right. Forgot about exhausts and bolt on tat as the best, and simplest, modification you can ever make to your bike is to have the suspension set up properly.

This will be the first bike I've had setup for suspension. I am naive, young and still learning
Had 11 bikes now and none of them have had a setup, Of course most of them had a full exhaust straight away
Plan on keeping this bike for a while so want to do it properly.

Suspension

Just remember having your suspension 'set up' doesn't simply mean buying aftermarket kit straightaway as you may not need it or benefit from it. Just visiting a suspension specialist and talking through what you want to be able to do, or what the bike is preventing you from doing, and then making adjustments is a good starting point. This is especially so if you have never altered your suspension before. Having your bike 'set up' only provides a base setting from which to work from and nothing more. That and whatever anyone tells you there is absolutely no such thing as a perfect set up as it's a continuously evolving process which never stops.

Just following from this, whats good for one rider isnt good for another. I couldnt get my oem front suspension to work for me (i know enough to try and get it to feel right). I ended up buying the bitubo pressurized forks from a guy who had them set up by buildbase for his weight (same as mine). In they went and straight away they felt much better and i left it at that for a yr. Only bug bear was they felt a little harsh and also had 2 front tyres wear before the rears. After some more fettling not only did it handle nice it also felt much more comfortable and tyre wear was back to how it should be.
In short, dont just rely on what people "say" is correct, make sure its correct for you

Does no one know the weight of the original front and back rims? I am on my way to buy the HP rims but would like to know the weight of my original rims.

Overall the weight saving of nearly 1 Kg is beneficial as any reduction in unsprung weight is always a good thing. What it really does illustrate is just how much of a worthwhile investment the HP wheels are when buying a new BMW S1000RR especially if you intend on using the bike on track.

The BST wheels do make a noticeable and positive difference to the BMW's handling. Steering is even more responsive and if anything direction changes are easier and require less physical effort. At tracks where the surface isn't as smooth as it should be, bumps are transmitted through the suspension much more noticeably with the BST wheels fitted. This is more so when compared to the HP wheels and it does impact upon suspension setup especially at faster tracks.

For me they are certainly a hugely worthwhile investment as a second set of wheels to compliment the HP offering that came fitted to my BMW. Whilst marginally better, what the BST wheels do highlight is just how good the HP wheels actually are.

In my opinion, if your buying a set of wheels for a road bike, which may see the occasional trackday, then forged wheels (any brand) are the way to go. For track use only then the BST wheels make complete sense. You will also find that forged wheels are considerably cheaper and don't forgot to budget for a second set of brake discs and sensor rings etc.
